Tip n°56 : The plant kingdom, another look

It’s a pleasure to see you again at this ‘almost’ start of the year 😃 ❗️

And it is with a touch of magic 🪄, a pinch of 'wonderful' 🤩 and in a perhaps a little surprising way 😉 that we are going to open this new series of tips.

This time, it is not about human beings that I am going to talk to you about, but about another area of life: the PLANT KINGDOM 🌳🌴🍀.

It was while reading the 📖 fascinating book by Joël de Rosnay, “The symphony of life”, that I had the idea for this article, a little different…

The scientific research on the subject is fascinating and it offers another look 👀 on this world rich in sensations.

Yes, that’s the word: 😌 sensations 😌.

Although they do not have a nervous system or a brain, plants and trees are nevertheless living beings with extraordinary sensory capacities.

You have most likely already noticed that many plants turn towards the light ☀️… Nothing really new so far…

This is explained by the presence of numerous photoreceptors, that is to say receptors sensitive to light. These allow them to optimally orient themselves towards the sun, thus maximizing photosynthesis, this astonishing mechanism by which they transform light energy into chemical energy. Just that ❗️

But that's not all...

Plants are also capable of perceiving wavelengths invisible to our eyes, such as ultraviolet (UV).

Too much sun ☀️ can be harmful, even for them. When they are exposed to excess UV, they make their own natural 'sun cream' 🧴 - a 'self-made' total screen - to protect themselves from burns 😲.

In addition to UV, they detect infrared (IR) which allows them, for example, to capture valuable information about their environment such as temperature variations 🌡️. They will thus adapt their metabolism and even 'sweat' 🥵 to release excess heat.

IR also offers them a strategic advantage: distinguishing the shade of other plants 🌿 and adjusting their growth, for example by lengthening their stem 🌱, to access more light.

It's as if we had the possibility to extend one of our arms, or one leg 🦵 ... or both 🦵🦵 - That would be better 😆.

Let's continue in the kingdom of sensations 👉 the plant is also endowed with an exceptional sensitivity to touch, which is not limited to the simple detection of supports to be able to roll up.

It goes way beyond...

Plants perceive tiny sensations, like the slightest breeze 🌬️ or the lightest touch on their leaves or stems. Certain species like the modest mimosa – it lives up to its name 😉 – even react by folding their leaves when touched.

The plant kingdom is also a big talker 💬💬💬. Here is an example:

Imagine a herbivore who has the good... or the bad... idea of setting his sights on a very green tree 🌳 to feast on it 😋.

It’s red alert 🚨!

One for all, all for one 🤲: the ‘in danger’ tree 🆘 which perceives this tasting as a real attack, emits chemical molecules to warn friends, neighboring trees 🌳🌳🌳. The latter, in response, increase their production of defensive substances 😠, thus transforming what could have been a delicious feast for the animal, into an absolutely filthy meal 🤢, even dangerous.

Not only do trees talk, they work as a team. In forests, trees coordinate their activities through underground networks of roots, connected by a particular type of fungi 🍄‍🟫. They are real biological highways 🛣️ which allow the exchange of nutrients and chemical signals.

This system has a name, it’s the ‘Wood Wide Web’! Yes, yes ❗️

A natural web 🌐 dedicated to communication and interconnection in the plant kingdom!

Great talkers I tell you ❗️

And it's not over...

Plants are also capable of ‘hearing’ 🙉 in their own way. They certainly don't have ears, but they perceive sounds, like those of pollinating insects, and adapt their nectar production to better attract them.

In addition, they react to vibrations caused by surrounding noises, such as wind or rain ☔️, thus adjusting their behavior depending on the environment.

The plant kingdom is anything but a passive kingdom 🙌.

He has this extraordinary ability to sense, feel and commune with his environment ♾️, and this in an extremely elaborate way.

Plants are sensitive beings, much more sensitive than we could perhaps imagine...

The next time we water our plants 🪴 or our garden 🏡, it will be with all the awareness of that touch of magic 🪄 and that pinch of ‘wonderful’ 🤩.

May your month of February be colored by this same energy 🥰.

✨✨✨ MIAM la Vie ✨✨✨ to all of you readers, and see you soon 🤗.
